Prof. Jin-Soo Kim interviewed by Asia Economy on geoengineering: can it be a 'magic' that saves the Earth?
Prof. Jin-Soo Kim (Climate System Lab, KAIST Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) was interviewed by Asia Economy (아시아경제) for its "Reading Science" feature on geoengineering, "Can 'geoengineering' become a 'magic' that saves the Earth?", published online on August 29, 2025 and in the September 1, 2025 print edition.
The feature reviews the history and main approaches of geoengineering, from stratospheric aerosol injection to carbon dioxide removal, and notes that related research and discussion are growing in Korea. Prof. Kim, who has modeled the climate effects of stratospheric aerosol injection, cautioned that although short-term cooling may occur, side effects such as changes in precipitation patterns cannot be ruled out. He added that while empirical research is still lacking, building the research foundation now could help Korea secure climate leadership, and that geoengineering research cannot be postponed given the Korean Peninsula's vulnerability to climate change.
