KAIST Urban Design Lab Presents Four Papers at ICAPPS 2026; Chulhyun Kim Receives the Young Planner Award
The KAIST Urban Design Lab (Prof. Youngchul Kim) participated in the 2026 International Conference of Asia-Pacific Planning Societies (ICAPPS 2026), held at Universitas Tarumanagara in Jakarta, Indonesia, on August 19–22, 2026. Organized by the Korea Planning Association together with the planning societies of Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia under the theme “Next-Gen Cities: Planning Globally Connected and Sustainable Urban Futures,” the conference brought together around 450 participants from six countries.

Four members of the lab delivered oral presentations on August 20, 2026:
- Chulhyun Kim and Youngchul Kim, “Bridging Generative AI and Rule-Based Reasoning: A Spatial Knowledge Graph Approach to Conceptual Urban Land-use Planning”
- Pamela Anna Joya and Youngchul Kim, “Probabilistic Social Vulnerability Mapping for Urban Flood Risk: An NGBoost Approach in Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea”
- Jung Woo Jang and Youngchul Kim, “Calibrating S2 Grid Resolution for Geospatial Representation Learning”
- Jiwon Kim and Youngchul Kim, “Urban Form as a Climate Adaptation Strategy for Sustainable Cities: A Systematic Review of Building Energy Demand Research and Future Directions”

We are also delighted to share that Mr. Chulhyun Kim (김철현), a Ph.D. student in the Urban Design Lab, received the Young Planner Award at ICAPPS 2026 for the paper “Bridging Generative AI and Rule-Based Reasoning: A Spatial Knowledge Graph Approach to Conceptual Urban Land-use Planning,” co-authored with Prof. Youngchul Kim. The award recognizes outstanding presentations by young researchers at the conference.

Congratulations to Chulhyun and to all of the presenters. The conference was a meaningful opportunity to share the lab’s latest research with planning researchers across the Asia-Pacific region, and the KAIST Smart City Research Center looks forward to continued exchange and collaboration.
