From September 7 to 10, 2026, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at KAIST hosted the Dubai Municipality–KAIST Exchange Program at the KAIST Smart City Center (W15) in Daejeon. Nine staff members of Dubai Municipality took part in the four-day program, which was Dubai Municipality's first youth knowledge exchange programme in Korea, working alongside KAIST CEE faculty members, researchers, and teaching assistants.
The program was organized around three main themes that are central to both Dubai Municipality and KAIST CEE: City Behavior and Urban Regeneration, Waste Management, and Disaster Management. Each day combined special lectures by KAIST faculty in the morning with hands-on team research sessions in the afternoon, supported by KAIST teaching assistants.
Program Overview
Day 1 (Monday, September 7) – Opening and Project Introduction.
Day 2 (Tuesday, September 8) – City Behavior and Urban Regeneration.
Day 3 (Wednesday, September 9) – Waste Management.
Day 4 (Thursday, September 10) – Disaster Management and Final Presentations.
Team Proposals
As the final output of the program, each team presented a concise proposal addressing a key urban challenge in Dubai. The proposals covered current projects and their limitations, a proposed policy, technology, or pilot project, the data and implementation approach required, and the expected outcomes and opportunities for future KAIST–Dubai Municipality collaboration.
The exchange program marked an important step in building a long-term partnership between KAIST CEE and Dubai Municipality. We look forward to continuing this collaboration through joint research, pilot projects, and future exchange programs on smart and resilient cities.
